On March 17, UMass Boston hosted a TeamSmile event that transformed the Clark Athletic Center into far more than an intimidating dental clinic— it became a vibrant, welcoming expression of the university’s commitment to community health.

TeamSmile, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving children’s oral health, partners with dental professionals and athletic organizations to provide free dental care and education to underserved youth in a fun, engaging environment. Through this model, children receive preventive and restorative services in a setting designed to make oral health more accessible and approachable.

At UMass Boston, 140 children from Title I Boston Public Schools were served by nearly 100 volunteers—including dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and community members—who donated their time and expertise to support the event.

The event also supported the Beacon Wellness Initiative’s “Oral Health Is…” campaign in recognition of World Oral Health Day, highlighting the role of oral health in overall well-being. As a health-promoting institution, UMass Boston continues to support initiatives that expand access to care, address health disparities, and create meaningful, community-centered experiences.

Throughout the day, children participated in a range of activities, including face painting, lawn games hosted by the Recreation department, and a smoothie bike. Student-athletes were also present, engaging with participants and helping facilitate activities.

Boston’s professional sports teams contributed to the event, with the Red Sox bringing Wally the Green Monster and a World Series trophy, and the Bruins sending their mascot, Blades, to join the fun. Beacon, the UMass Boston Police Department’s comfort dog, was also present.

Each child received dental services, oral health education, a TeamSmile T-shirt, and a Colgate kit to take home, reinforcing healthy habits long after the day ended.

Overall, the event brought together healthcare providers, volunteers, and community partners to support children’s oral health and advance UMass Boston’s commitment to community well-being.
